Backgrounds

Abstract automatism painting in acrylic on solid hardwood panels, each 1.3 metres high and designed to slot together to form a continuous, potentially endless painting. The panels can currently be arranged as a painting 2.6 metres high and 10 metres long, or 1.3 metres high and 20 metres long. The images emerge from the background forms, colours and spaces I see and feel in everyday life; appearing with my eyes closed, overlaid onto the physical world through my synaesthetic experience of seeing. The panels do not have to be assembled chronologically; within the subconscious, I experience time less as a fixed sequence than as something constantly shifting, with past, present and future overlapping and informing the inner eye. The work is deliberately unfinished. Panels can be added, rearranged, repainted or extended whenever the mood or need arises, allowing the painting to remain a record of an artistic process of painting from the subconscious.
