1st Bathroom
My first site-specific painting, made in 1996 at 92 Rosary Road, Norwich, was painted directly onto the walls of a bathroom and across the toilet. The work responded to the architecture and particular character of the room, overlaying it with monochrome patterns derived from my synaesthetic experience of the space. I deliberately reduced the work to monochrome, simplifying the visual language while allowing the underlying forms and patterns to remain connected to the room itself. The work was temporary and was documented using roll film photography. At the time, photography was relatively expensive, limiting the amount of documentation I could make, and little photographic evidence of these early works remains. The surviving images are low-quality photographs that have since been AI-enhanced to make the work more legible, while retaining the limitations of the original documentation.
